International Yoga Day 2022: Theme, Significance, and Importance

The International Day of Yoga is popularly celebrated across countries on June 21 every year to raise awareness about the importance and benefits of yoga. It is being said that yoga helps balance the body and mind. The term “yoga” has come from two Sanskrit words – “Yuj,” which means together, and “Yujir”, which means “to unite”.

As a combination of careful body postures and meditation, yoga can help you achieve harmony of the mind, body, and soul. In fact, it can boost your immunity and resistance to common illnesses, stress, and anxiety. The event, which is the brainchild of PM Narendra Modi, was first celebrated on 21st June 2015. International Yoga Day History

On September 27, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the first time, presented the idea of an International Day of Yoga during his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Later on December 11, 2014, the UNGA declared June 21 to be observed as World Yoga Day or International Yoga Day.

Since 2015, International Yoga Day has been observed on June 21. 

 

Importance of Yoga Day 

The first International Yoga Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm on 21st June 2015. In New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with 36,000 people, performed 21 asanas (yoga postures) for 35 minutes. Since then International Yoga Day has been celebrated all around the world. On the 8th International Yoga Day the main events will take place in Mysore, Karnataka

According to the UN, Yoga can be an important instrument in the collective quest of humanity for promoting sustainable lifestyle in harmony with planet Earth. In keeping with this spirit, the theme for this year’s Yoga Day celebrations is “Yoga for Humanity.”
